  • Sci-Fi Movies

    April 19, 2019 | 7:00pm - 9:00pm

The feature will be Metropolis, a 1927 German expressionist science fiction drama with English intertitles. It is approximately 2 hours in length. The screenplay is by Thea von Harbou and directed by Fritz Lang , with cinematography by Karl Freund and Gunther Rittau. Both Freund and Lang immigrated to the U.S. in 1929 and 1936 respectively, and enjoyed long careers in Hollywood. In von Harbou’s version of the future, the wealthy factory owners live in a sparkling city while the workers live in a drab underground realm. The epigram of the movie is: The Mediator Between the Head and the Hands must be he Heart. H.G. Wells supposedly called this movie “silly.” I believer he was referring to the phrase above and not the technical achievements in this film. It quickly becomes clear which characters represent head, hands and heart. Throw in the kind Maria and the crazed inventor Rotwang, and you have the makings for chaos. Lang’s visit to New York City in 1924 inspired his creation of the cityscape. Where he got is idea of the underground workers’ quarters, I have no idea. This is NOT a kids’ movie!!
